Jenny Lin provided independent legal advice and Mandarin translation service to my partner when we were creating a prenuptial agreement. She did an excellent job of representing my partner and suggested some useful changes to the agreement. She also worked very well with my lawyer to finalize said agreement. Very bad experience with this law firm. Despite handling the set up of our family members Will… I experienced that they acted with extreme bias and tried to shaft my family out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by undervaluing assets and allowing the omission of valuable personal items. The Will they set up for our family member, lay open to interpretation the value of key assets that in turn created the context for much conflict and lack of clarity and imbalance in distribution, despite our family member wanting a fair division of their assets. I could never ever recommend this firm for setting up a Will.

I also found they just had a lack of knowledge of key aspects of estate law and Canadian tax law. Not exactly incompetent, but just lacking in full clear knowledge of key relevant points.

Along with this, they retained a one sided attitude of self interest throughout, that limited all sense of potential cooperation or balance.

There were also veiled threats that if we did not agree to their distorted unbalanced valuations on all matters, that our costs would increase dramatically as a punitive measure to not accepting their interpretation, despite those differences in valuation amounting to hundreds of thousands.

It’s like they used coercion to manipulate matters along and try to force our side of the family into a highly unbalanced settlement by both withholding the release of any resources and refusing to allow a fair distribution of assets or honouring key aspect of the will.

They squeezed us as hard as they could to make sure we did not have enough money at a time that we were in dire need, so that we would agree to their version of valuation and settlement.

Definitely the worst experience I ever had with such matters… by far.

I found that they set up a bad Will by not pointing out key aspects of imbalance to our family member while setting up their Will, such as rental incomes during estate proceedings, and valuation flux around in the housing market during the years of estate proceedings. On top of this they chose to only support the interests of certain beneficiaries giving us all the impression of extreme bias and self interest.

I know that a better law firm could have easily avoided such imbalances… and abuses of power.
