I had an extremely poor experience with Mr. Derek Lovatt handling my case. Below are the key reasons why:

He was unprepared for trial, which was noted in court by the judge.

He appeared unfamiliar with trial procedures, a concern also pointed out by the judge.

He failed to utilize all the evidence provided to him, not as a strategic decision, but simply because he forgot.

His cross-examination of witnesses was inadequate, as explicitly stated by the judge.

He misstated key details and events in my case, leading the judge to disregard them.

He was late in submitting critical written arguments for trial.

He did not allow me to review his written submissions before presenting them to the court.

His written defense was so poor that the judge took time to criticize his lack of focus, particularly regarding new evidence introduced during trial.

Beyond his legal performance, his attitude was equally concerning. After the failed trial, during a discussion with my partner and me, Mr. Lovatt made the shocking comment: "Sometimes good people go to jail, and bad people walk. Now pay me." I found this remark to be not only unprofessional but also deeply insensitive.

If you are considering hiring this lawyer, I strongly urge you to do thorough research. If I could go back, I would have hired someone else. His errors, lack of preparation, and dismissive attitude have cost me dearly—both in time with my family and in my case.

For anyone moving forward with Mr. Lovatt, ensure you get all cost estimates in writing before proceeding.

Mr. Lovatt has since relocated from Calgary to Vancouver. Unfortunately, I am not the only one who has had issues with his representation. Please be extremely cautious if you choose to work with him.
