I had a very disappointing experience with Cook Roberts (Todd Ferguson) as my lawyer. Communication was extremely slow; he often did not respond to my calls or emails in a timely manner. On top of that, some important parts of my case were not handled properly, which caused unnecessary stress and delays. I worked with him twice, and unfortunately both times it resulted in financial loss for me. I also felt that he did not pay enough attention to my concerns and did not follow up on my cases. A good lawyer should be responsible for the work they do and try to resolve any problems that arise.Overall, I cannot recommend his services and would strongly advise others to look for a more reliable and responsive lawyer.

I reached out to Cook Roberts LLP for legal help with terminating a disability trust so I could regain control of my finances. From the start, the experience was disappointing and concerning. Despite my name being clearly spelled “Caleb” in all communications, I was repeatedly addressed as “Calab” by the legal assistant — a small but telling detail that reflected a lack of care or attention.

I was told I needed to pay a retainer of $475/hour just to book a call, with no sign of engagement or real willingness to understand my case before charging me. There was no sense of urgency or empathy, despite the fact that I was reaching out while living in government-run affordable housing and dealing with financial control by trustees.

The overall tone of the interaction was bureaucratic and cold — I didn’t feel respected or heard. I’ve since decided to look elsewhere for legal help and would advise others seeking trauma-informed or genuinely supportive counsel to do the same.

The legal profession needs to do better when working with vulnerable individuals, especially those seeking help after years of systemic harm.

I contacted this firm to help with a civil case that I had already done most of the Supreme Court steps work prior to contacting them. I was clear that the defendant was awaiting my response and though it wasn't time sensitive yet, I wasn't sure timelines with courts. I was asked to send all my documents over which I did same day I spoke with Susan. 6 weeks later I'm told the lawyer finally had a chance to look at my claim and cannot commit to taking on my file. Thanks for wasting 6 weeks of my time leaving my claim now in crisis time crunch. I would not waste your time when they don't take yours into consideration!

Ditto for the other low rating on Kirby Hayes. She is only interested in racking up fees, and she is definitely NOT interested in representing the best interests of her client(s). She lied to me in our first meeting (!). Further she advocates strategies that are impractical and, upon checking with other lawyers, undoable. I wonder, did she really graduate from law school? A real shyster. Kirby is useless and immoral.

This firm is venal.

If you are looking for a lawyer, please go see Kyle Hamilton at Cook Roberts. I have had bad experiences in the past with lawyers not returning calls, responding to emails, overbilling, crappy advocacy etc. Come to think of it, I am not sure I have ever had a lawyer that was 'worth it'.

Mr. Hamilton has renewed my faith in lawyers, and greatly exceeded my expectations. He responds promptly to what are likely annoying requests, even in the evenings, weekends and when on holiday with his family. His rate is more than reasonable, and I would dare say he is not charging enough for the level of service he provides.

We had the unfortunate problem with someone that didn't pay their bill, and initiated proceedings as self-represented litigants. Mr. Hamilton was more than willing to provide unbundled legal services, and guide us through the complexity of the Supreme Court of BC. When we retained him directly to perform our Examinations, he grasped the essence of our messy file in no time flat, and knocked those examinations out of the park. A truly talented lawyer.

When we had trouble paying our bill, Mr. Hamilton and Cook Roberts graciously went out of their way to make arrangements that worked for us - and continued to provide service! I dare you to find a law firm anywhere that will do that, or lawyers that care about your legal issue more than the fees they can get out of you.
